Swimmers, take your marks ...

We invite all Olde Providence members ages 5 through 18 to join our swim team, regardless of their ability or experience. It's a great way for youngsters and teens to perfect their strokes, make new friends, and experience being part of a team. Olde Providence is in the South Park Swim League and competes against six other division teams. Expect six swim meets per season.

Swim team registration for the 2017 season will begin late March. Please send an e-mail to OPRCSwim@gmail.com to receive registration information when it becomes available.

All swimmers who are new to the team are assessed to determine their swimming ability and comfort level in the water. In order to swim in a meet, each child must be able to swim 25 meters of freestyle unassisted without signs of distress. This means no help from coaches, parents, officials, lane lines, or walls. Those who are close to mastering the 25-meter swim will have an opportunity for reassessment before each meet. Coaches continue to work with children at practice, regardless of their ability to compete

  • Practices will begin mid-May; the season will be finished before July 1.

  • Practices are in the late afternoon, by age group (beginning no earlier than 5:30, finishing no later than 8 p.m.).

  • Expect six swim meets per season, on Monday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings.

  • All swim team families are required to volunteer at swim meets.

  • Your swimmer must be at least 5 years old as of May 31, 2017.  NO EXCEPTIONS.

Age Categories:

A child's age group is determined by his or her age as of May 31. Following are the different age groups:

Shrimpers (6 and UNDER):

These swimmers compete in one length (25 meters) of freestyle. Results are not scored as part of the meet.

8 and UNDER:

These swimmers should be able to swim one length of the pool (25 meters) of freestyle and should be able to demonstrate at least one other stroke.

9 and 10 Years:

These swimmers should be familiar with competitive strokes - butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. They should also be willing to learn from and practice with our experienced coaches. It is not necessary to be proficient in all strokes or to be an expert swimmer. Their events will require them to swim at least one length of the pool (25 meters). They may also compete in the 100-meter IM (Individual Medley) which requires them to swim one 25 meter length of each stroke - a total of four pool lengths.

11 and 12 Years, 13 and 14 years, 15 through 18 years:

These swimmers have the same requirements as the 9- and 10-year-olds except that they must swim two pool lengths (50 meters) for each event except the IM (Individual Medley), which will be 100 meters.

Practice Schedule

Practices start mid-May and continue through the end of June. Swimmers are grouped according to age and ability. Practice duration varies from group to group. Shrimpers typically swim 30 minutes, and 7 and 8 year olds swim 45 minutes.  All other groups swim one hour. Practices take place between 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.
